Muppet Babies is the 2018 Disney Junior reboot of the 1984 show of the same name. The show and the channel have a target audience of children ages 3 to 8 years old.
The following is an abbreviated summary of the GLAAD Media Awards nominated segment "Gonzo-Rella," which aired on Disney Junior on July 23, 2021 and is now available to stream on Disney+ and still airs on both Disney Junior and Disney Channel.
The episode starts with Miss Piggy and Summer (a purple penguin character that was added to the cast for the reboot) inviting Kermit, Fozzie, Animal, and Gonzo to a royal ball.
Rizzo the rat recounts the story of Cinderella to the group and Summer shows a picture of Cinderella from her handbook.
“Get a load of that dress! I’d love to wear a dress like that to your royal ball” Gonzo exclaims
“But Gonzo, Piggy and I are the princesses. We wear the dresses” says Summer
“That’s right! According to the royal handbook, the girls come as princesses and the boys come as knights” adds Piggy
The rest of the male characters assure Gonzo that they’re all going to have a great time as everyone but Gonzo exits. Rizzo the rat turns back to see a dejected Gonzo.
“I really wish I could wear one of those princess dresses to the ball” says Gonzo.
Rizzo tell Gonzo that he is Gonzo’s “Fairy Rat-Father” as his outfit transforms to include a crown, fairy wings, and a magic wand. He then offers to provide Gonzo with the perfect dress to wear to the ball.
“But the girls said I’m not supposed to wear a dress. I don’t want everyone to be upset with me” says Gonzo.
Rizzo offers to make the outfit so that no-one will recognize him, saying “Bippidy-Boppidy Blabber” as he transforms Gonzo’s classic Muppet Babies red overalls, shirt, and sneakers into an extravagant evening gown, opera gloves, glass sneakers, and winged eye mask.
“Have you ever seen such a splenderiffic dress! Thank you, Fairy Rat-father! This makes me so happy!” exclaims Gonzo.
Later, “Gonzo-Rella” arrives at the ball after the other attendees.
“Look! It’s… a mysterious new princess!” Piggy says. Gonzo is relieved to have his secret intact as he introduces himself. “well, we’re happy to have you, Gonzo-Rella, and your dress is simply fabulous” says Piggy as she calls for herself, Summer, and Gonzo-Rella to greet each other with a “princess curtsy”
The ball is filled with moments where they refer to the royal handbook for what to do, only to find that Gonzo-Rella’s new ideas are more fun.
Gonzo is reminded by Rizzo that his princess dress will disappear at the stroke of “cake o’clock” at which point a terrified Gonzo hurries out of the ball, followed by the rest of the attendees as they voice their desire for Gonzo-Rella to wait.
“Aren’t you glad you made it out in time?” says Rizzo to Gonzo, now in his regular outfit.
“No… I didn’t want to leave the royal ball. But everyone would have been upset if they knew it was me wearing that princess dress” says Gonzo, sad-faced and dejected.
“Are you sure about that?” comforts Rizzo “cuz it seems to me maybe they just would have been surprised that you wanted to wear a princess dress. It’s different from what they’re used to. Y’know?”
But trying something different can be fun” says Gonzo.
“Exactly! And at the royal ball you helped them see that, right?” says Rizzo as he reminds Gonzo about all the items from the royal handbook that Gonzo’s friends liked more after Gonzo-Rella changed them.
“Maybe if they’re okay with those things being different, they’d be okay with me wearing a princess dress too?” says Gonzo.
Miss Piggy and the other Muppet Babies arrive.
“I think now’s your chance to find out” says Rizzo as he disappears in a magical glow.
Piggy and friends tell Gonzo that they missed him at the royal ball and that they met the “most amazing princess” as they present Gonzo-Rella’s glass sneaker.
“Everyone, there’s something I need to tell you” says Gonzo as he puts on the glass slipper “the princess who came to your ball tonight was me” he says as he magically transforms back into his Gonzo-Rella dress.
They all stand in loving awe as he tells them “I’m Gonzo-Rella!”
“But Gonzo, why didn’t [you] tell us?” asks Piggy
“Because you all expected me to look a certain way. I don’t want you all to be upset with me. But I don’t want to do things just because that’s the way they’ve always been done either. I want to be me” says Gonzo.
Miss Piggy apologizes and tells Gonzo it wasn’t very nice to tell Gonzo what to wear to the ball.
“You’re our friend and we love you any way you are” says Summer as the male Muppet Babies utter in agreement.
“I say we get rid of this old royal handbook and make a better one” says Piggy as she tosses the handbook far away.
“And in our new handbook, everyone can come to the ball dressed however they like” says Summer as they all cheer in excitement.
The music swells back at the royal ballroom as the Muppet Babies dance together with Gonzo-Rella, with his friends in different outfits. Fozzie and Kermit have changed into pink bow-ties and top hats, Animal wears a homemade crown, while Piggy and Summer dress as knights.
Rizzo returns as Gonzo’s Fairy Rat-Father to say “and they all lived happily ever after”
