In a story about the compensation of original comic book creators, The Hollywood Reporter added additional details about the upcoming Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
As the title of the film implies, Doctor Strange will be dealing with the consequences of multiple universes (once referred to as 'alternate dimensions') interacting with each other in a cataclysmic way.
Over the course of the plot, Doctor Strange will come across a fellow superhero named America Chavez, who has the ability to travel across multiple universes. In the original Marvel comics, America Chavez has two mothers and self-identifies as a lesbian in Young Avengers Vol 2 #15.
The Hollywood Reporter has stated "the film will also acknowledge the character is gay," which will make her the first confirmed lesbian character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This adds her to the growing list of MCU characters who publicly identify as LGBT, including Loki, Phastos, and Valkyrie (who will be searching for her queen in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder according to Marvel).
America Chavez was originally going to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but was cut from the film when the release date of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness was pushed back.
There is no confirmation if Sony, who holds the film rights to Spider-Man, had any objection to the inclusion of America Chavez due to her sexuality. In leaked emails they stated that they would not make Spider-Man / Peter Parker gay in their movies unless the character was made gay in the comics first.
Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness opens in theaters May 6, 2022.
